Abstract
This study explores how Seoul (the capital) was represented in short specter narratives (鬼神談) produced between the 15th and 17th centuries, with a particular focus on the imagined geographies shaped by the Confucian literati. Hanyangdoseong―the walled city at the heart of Joseon―was designed as a spatial realization of Neo-Confucian ideals, embodying the political and moral order envisioned by the ruling elite. Yet ghost stories found in Pilgi (筆記: unofficial records) and Yadam (野談: anecdotal collections) often set their eerie events both inside and outside the city walls, suggesting a parallel geography marked by the unknown. In specter tales from the early Joseon period, spirits frequently appeared around newly built urban landmarks, revealing how supernatural narratives were woven into the city’s emerging identity. By the 17th century, however, stories began to reflect the turmoil of the times ― wars, epidemics. Specters haunted not only private residences but also public buildings, turning Seoul into a space shared by the living and the dead. Meanwhile, the intensification of uncertainty in reality, driven by political events, became a factor in the appearance of specters in Seoul. Particularly in the homes of Sadaebu (士大夫: the scholar-gentry) families, ghostly encounters served as warnings of decline and ruin. These narratives of fantasy reflect the atmosphere of anxiety and fear that characterized Seoul during this era.
