초록
This study explores the representation of "Hanyang" of the eighteenth century through a close reading of the literati writings and yadam (unofficial history). So far the studies of Hanyang have been focused on tracing the social and economic changes in the structure and capitalist development of Seoul, intent on locating the birth of modernity of the Chosǒn society. Shifting such perspective to an insider's look, this study shows how Hanyang and its drastic changes had been perceived by the city dwellers. The literary reflections of Hanyang, envisioned through the eyes of Seoul locals, also offer intriguing observations on the formation of an urban identity in the given context. In the writings, Hanyang was described as the city imbued with greed, temptations, and dangers; the country also loses its symbolic functions and imageries as a natural, innocent, peaceful place, so the conventional images of the city and the country were subverted and revisited in the literati writings. On the other hand, we also witness the rise of kyǒnghwa sajok (literati groups of the capital) and the Seoul locals, developing a sense of "new" community, during the period. In this study, the building of a new sense of local identity of Hanyang, shows how the urban identity has been created and solidified through the processes of devaluation of others and generation of a notion of the country.
