Abstract
This study examined whether Barber and Odean (2008)’s research results that individual investors tend to buy based on stocks of interest are also applied to the domestic stock market. Barber and Odean (2008) argues that individual investors tend to buy stocks that attract attention from many investors due to the difficulty of selecting issues. Due to these time constraints and low analysis capabilities, individuals are likely to ride on the attention-grabbing stocks that most investors pay attention to rather than selecting stocks based on rational and thorough analysis assumed in traditional financial theory. This study aims to set the proxy indicators for investor interest as an abnormal surge in transaction volume, an abnormal surge in returns of stocks, and the number of stock discussion bulletin board posts. The empirical test results are as follows. First, individuals showed a net-buying behavior as the trading volume increased rapidly. Next, individual investors in the KOSDAQ market showed a pattern of net buying. As a result of analyzing the surge in postings, individual investors showed a net buying trading pattern when a high level of surge in postings is happened. Financial authorities need to strengthen the protection of individual investors by strengthening high-level monitoring of false or exaggerated posts on major securities bulletin boards.
