Abstract
The various short-form narratives of the Enlightenment period emerged as expressions of the concerns and practices of contemporary intellectuals. These narrative works existed as the results of numerous experiments along the journey toward modern literature. Even though they did not always take a completed or finalized form, the attempts and practices of intellectuals at that time can be seen as meaningful experiments in the history of narrative literature. Among these forms, the fable also existed as a distinctive mode of the Enlightenment period. Fables, which had been a widely practiced literary form during the late Joseon dynasty, re-emerged actively as a narrative style in the Enlightenment period. Among the diverse narrative forms introduced during this time, fables were not regarded as fully developed literary forms but rather as one of the tools for enlightenment. Of course, it is difficult to say that these narrative experiments directly shaped modern literature or established a canonized, concrete literary form. However, during the Enlightenment period, traditional fables were combined with newly introduced Western fables, resulting in various adaptations that used animal allegories to represent contemporary social issues. Among these, fables published in magazines carried clear enlightenment purposes while also focusing more on intellectual readers, candidly revealing their internal conflicts and dilemmas. Furthermore, many of these fables contained implicit layers of criticism and satire through indirect narrative methods. Fables in Enlightenment-era magazines were transformed and expanded in three main directions. First, Western fables introduced during the Enlightenment were practically accepted and adapted through strategic use of media. Second, traditional fables were inherited but creatively reinterpreted with narrative modifications. Third, the framework of existing fables was transcended, expanding into new narrative experiments. These narrative works in Enlightenment magazines were the direct outcome of the intellectuals' concerns about their contemporary era. Through fables, the intellectuals of the Enlightenment period sought to cultivate modern, autonomous individuals who think, judge, and take responsibility for themselves. At the same time, they embedded allegorical critiques of contemporary realities, including domestic and international threats and problems, into the fables. Through these fables, the intellectuals of the time engaged in intense reflection and experimentation, redefining the role of literature during Korea‘s Enlightenment period.
