Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effect of the changes in oil prices on the connectedness among the financial markets: namely, the money, bond, foreign exchange and stock markets. To do this, a Markov switching model has been adopted for the sample period from January 4, 2005 to August 28, 2025. The empirical result indicates that an increase in oil price reduces the connectedness among Korean Financial markets regardless of the states, while a decrease in oil price increases the connectedness only in the tranquil state. This result could be driven by the fact that the increase in oil demand due to global economic expansion leads to a rise in oil prices, and then global economic expansion has a positive impact on the Korean economy and financial markets. Overall, our finding suggests that investors and policy-makers are more cautious of the effect of the changes in oil prices on the connectedness among the financial markets during the tranquil state.
