Abstract

This study investigated the volatility and shocks transmission between WTI and KOSPI 15 sector indices and explored the persistence of shocks of WTI on the volatilities of KOSPI sector indices using the VIRF method. In addition, this study analyzed the weights of optimal portfolios and hedging ratios between WTI and KOSPI sector indices to minimize the exposed risk. Our empirical results are as following. First, the estimation results of GARCH-BEKK model show the volatility spillover effects between WTI and sector indices. In particular, some sector volatiles (Chemicals, Transport Equipment, Construction, Finance, Manufacture Industry) are very sensitive to the shocks of WTI volatility. Second, it is observed that the impact of shocks on volatilities is intensified and persistent after the collapse of Lehman (September 15th , 2008). Third, the weights of optimal portfolio and hedging ratios between WTI and sector indices are analyzed to minimize the risk of oil shocks. These weights and ratios provides a efficient portfolio strategy for each industry sector to cope with the risk of black swan, such as the 2007-2009 global financial crisis.
