Abstract
This study examines public perceptions of the newly implemented round-based scoring system in Taekwondo and evaluates its impact on the viewing experience compared to the traditional cumulative scoring method. This study employed a mixed-methods design, utilising a survey of 104 participants with both open- and closed-ended questions to collect quantitative and qualitative data on spectators’ perceptions of the Taekwondo round-based system. The findings of this study indicate that, while the round-based system enhances excitement and viewer engagement, it also introduces challenges related to complexity and perceived fairness. Notably, spectators advocated for clearer guidelines and the reinstatement of the golden point rule as a tiebreaker to ensure a more equitable and comprehensible competition framework. This study concludes that by refining the round-based system and improving transparency in rule application, Taekwondo can maintain its cultural integrity while successfully adapting to contemporary spectator demands, thereby increasing its global appeal.
