초록

The recent introduction of an electronic scoring system in Taekwondo has been critiqued for diminishing spectator enjoyment due to its emphasis on scoring and defence. The 2021 introduction of ‘Power Taekwondo’, a new format receiving positive media and public attention, has yet to be fully explored in terms of athlete experience. The study aims to delve into the perceptions and experiences of athletes involved in Power Taekwondo. Drawing upon qualitative research methods, including document analysis, this article conducted semi-structured interviews with nine Taekwondo athletes experienced in Power Taekwondo. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis. Through qualitative thematic analysis, this article identifies three main findings. Firstly, most participants viewed the introduction of Power Taekwondo favourably. Secondly, these athletes felt pressured to execute rotational techniques and were concerned about a higher risk of injury compared to standard competitions. Thirdly, although many athletes were keen to participate, concerns were raised about the inexperienced management of the competition, stemming from a lack of weight class diversity and referees’ limited understanding of the rules. This article indicates that the ongoing sportification of Taekwondo aids its development. However, it also uncovers unintended consequences such as the pressure to perform complex kicks, increased injury risk, and inadequate comprehension of game rules, highlighting the need for further research and improvements in these areas.

Abstract
