Abstract
As interest in the social roles of art museums grows in Korea, educational programs in art museums have increased significantly over the past 10 years. Today, most art museums provide educational programs for families and elementary school children. However, less attention has been paid to the educational potential of the museum learning experience for changing structured learning contexts in schools. This paper explores the educational potential of exhibition space by reviewing a case study on an exhibition-based educational program recently held the OCI Museum of Art in Seoul. To draw out the characteristics of the educational activities and their meanings, the analysis of the data proceeded in two steps: First, multiple forms of data collected from the site were reviewed in relation to three aspects: physical, personal, and social. Second, the outcomes were presented to a group of four elementary-school teachers to determine the implications for school learning contexts. The results show that educational activities in exhibition spaces provide novel and stimulating physical learning space, cause strong personal motivation, and encourage the social exchange of ideas. The outcomes of the study can enhance teachers’ understanding of the nature of the learning activities held in exhibition spaces and have educational implications for structured school learning contexts.
