Abstract
This paper explores the educational potential of creative art space by reviewing a case studyof the characteristics and educational implications of a recent collaborative art program carriedout in an art center in Seoul. The data collected from the site were first arranged into threecategories: environmental characteristics, characteristics of artist-student collaborations, andparticipants’responses to the collaborative works. Then the outcomes were compared with thefindings of a previous study to draw out implications for art education in schools. Based on thisanalysis, the study found that 1) creative art space, as a social space where social interactionsand cultural exchanges are activated by the creative activities of professional artists, can makethe students’ experience in the workshop unique; 2) the practicing artists in the creative spacecan make the process of collaborative works more interactive and dynamic than the practitionersin more formal educational spaces do and therefore, 3) the art-making experience in a creativeart space can encourage more participation in the creative space, processes, sharing, andexchanging, compared with similar activities in other educational spaces. The study’s outcomescan enhance teachers’ understanding of the nature of collaborative activities in creative artspaces. In addition, it draws educational attention to the need for a more socially responsive arteducation practice that is sensitive to changes in ideas and practices in the contemporary artworld. The study supports the need for more extensive research on the educational possibilitiesof diverse forms of art spaces in the contemporary art world.
