Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an inquiry-based museum education programled by a museum educator in Korea. The program was evaluated by comparison with an art museumeducation program led by an art interpreter, who mainly provided explanations of artworks to visitors. Thiswas a qualitative study employing participant observation and interview methods. Two programs were selectedin the Museum of Contemporary Art in Korea: one led by an art interpreter and one led by a museumeducator. The programs were compared and evaluated based on the content of the classes, components ofteaching, and characteristics of learning. As a result of the comparison, it was discovered that both programsfocused on objects, i.e., the artwork. The art interpreter, who used long explanations and questions withdefinite answers, failed to lead students into voluntary engagement with the artwork. However, the museumeducator, working in an inquiry-based art museum education program, successfully promoted students’voluntary learning and sought their diverse opinions by employing meditation moments, open-ended questions, and storytelling. The results of this study indicate that it is necessary for art museums in Korea to designinquiry-based museum education programs rather than explanation-oriented programs led by art interpreters.
