Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to test whether students’academic emotions and self- regulated strategies for learning mediate the relationship between social support perceived from teachers and engagement in dance classes. A total of 428 middle school students (194 males, 234 females) were participated in the study. Data were conducted using descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis, one-way MANOVA, correlations, structural equation modeling, and multi-group analysis. The results of structural equation modeling and multi-group analysis were as follows: First, teachers’social support led students to participate in dance classes actively as enhancing students’ self-regulated learning strategies via positive emotions. Second, teachers’social support decreases students’ feeling of anxiety which negatively affected on self-regulated strategy for learning, but self-regulated strategy for learning enhance students’engagement in class. Third, friends’social support makes students to participate in the dance classes via enjoy and self- regulated strategy. Fourth, friends’social support makes students to participate in the dance classes as decreasing anxiety and facilitating self-regulated learning strategies. Fifth, the effects of social support from teacher and friends vis academic emotions and self-regulated strategy on engagement in dance class was variant across gender. These findings suggest that students will be willing to participate in dance classes actively when teachers give respect, compassion, trust, and attention to them including prosocial interpersonal relationships.
