Abstract
This study analyzes how music textbooks under the 2022 revised music curriculum in Korea pres ent connections with other disciplines and cross-curricular themes, and aims to suggest directions and implications for integrated instruction in music education. Drawing on prior research, we re constructed three integration types—instrumental integration, theme-centered integration, and con cept-based integration—as analytic criteria, and applied them to 148 activities in middle-school mu sic textbooks and 36 activities in grades 3–4 music textbooks. The analysis shows that in middle school about 90% of activities fell into instrumental or theme-centered integration, with concept-based integration accounting for only 10.1%. In grades 3–4, instrumental integration was 75.0%, theme-centered 22.2%, and concept-based just 2.8%, indicating that deep cross-disciplinary integration was highly limited at both levels. Regarding linked subjects, connections were concentrated in Korean language and visual arts in middle school and in physical education in elementary grades, with relatively sparse links to other subjects. For cross-curricular themes, environment (middle school) and multicultural education (elementary) were most frequent, yet such links largely remained instrumental uses of music. In response, the study illustrates the potential of redesigning selected activities toward con cept-based and practice-based integration. It further recommends incorporating common cross-sub ject concepts and structural alignments from the textbook-development stage and supporting teacher collaboration, professional development, and field research to deepen teachers’ understanding of each subject’s core ideas and key concepts. This study is expected to provide opportunities to ex plore integrated instruction in music education from multiple angles.
