Abstract
This study aims to examine the gap between cinematic representation and historical perception by comparing the filmic character of Jin Chae-seon in the faction film The Sound of a Flower (2015) with her historical image. Jin Chae-seon, known as the first female pansori singer of the late Joseon Dynasty, lacks detailed historical records regarding her appearance, personality, and life trajectory. However, the film fills these historical blanks through artistic imagination and creative reconstruction, reinterpreting Jin Chae-seon as a symbolic and independent character rather than a mere historical figure. The study investigates the social and cultural background of women in the Joseon era and conducts a scene-by-scene analysis of Jin Chae-seon’s appearance, personality, and role within the film’s narrative. Particular attention is given to cinematic techniques such as mise-en-scène, montage, and camera framing, which serve as key devices in shaping character identity and symbolic meaning. The findings reveal that The Sound of a Flower is not merely a biographical film but a faction film that emphasizes the modern significance of female artistry, subjectivity, and identity. Jin Chae-seon is portrayed as both an artist who transcends oppression and a cultural icon beyond her time. Moreover, her changing makeup and costume visually reflect her character’s growth, demonstrating the potential and significance of makeup design in historical films. This study contributes a new perspective to research on historical dramas and female representa tion by elucidating how the intersection of fact and fiction in faction films can expand into gendered and cultural discourses. Future studies should further explore the representational patterns of female characters in various historical films to deepen the understanding of the socio-cultural implications of faction cinema.
