Abstract
This study analyzes Angela Schanelec’s films through the lens of affect theory, exploring the new points her work raises for contemporary film aesthetics. Schanelec inherits the traditions of the Berlin School, but she also transforms them in her own way to create a unique cinematic aesthetic: her films focus on deconstructing event-driven narratives and utilizing cinematic elements such as body, space, time, and sound to create a sensory experience for the audience. This paper examines how the absence of narrative and formal elements in Schanelec’s films reorganize the audience’s perception. It first examines the ways in which her work embraces the legacy of the Berlin School and modernist cinema, but also creates original variations on it. It then analyzes the ways in which formal devices such as silence and empty space function as key aesthetic strategies in Schanelec’s films, forcing the viewer to experience new layers of sensation. More than just a narrative framework, Schanelec’s films invite audiences to reconstruct their relationship with the world through the medium of film. Her work is significant in expanding the horizons of contemporary cinematic aesthetics because it creates emotional tension in the absence of events and establishes new relationships with the audience through sensory flows. Through the medium of cinema, Schanelec sensually revisits the human interior and world, and invites the viewer to actively engage with the work. This paper argues that Angela Schanelec’s works go beyond mere formal experimentation, reconstructing the audience’s experience and positioning themselves as a practice that proposes new possibilities for the cinematic medium.
