Abstract

This study aimed to explore the motives for entering and attending an arts high school and the processes of identity formation and confusion experienced by female students majoring in Korean dance. A qualitative case study was conducted with 27 students enrolled in a Seoul-based arts high school, using open-ended self-narrative questionnaires as the primary data collection tool. The col lected data were categorized and analyzed through content analysis. The results revealed that the stu dents’ initial motives for learning dance included family influence, artistic sensitivity, physical factors, and the desire for self-expression, while their reasons for entering an arts high school were related to structured learning environments, continuity of major studies, peer relationships, and emotional commitment. During their dance training, the students simultaneously experienced self-exploration, emotional crises, and loss of autonomy due to external control, leading to both self-reflective growth and identity confusion. These findings suggest that identity formation among dance-major students in arts high schools is a complex process shaped by psychological, emotional, and relational factors, rather than a simple pursuit of technical excellence. Therefore, arts education should be expanded to support self-reflection, emotional growth, and identity development through integrated pedagogical approaches such as creative choreography-based classes, emotional support systems, and career counseling programs. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that dance, as an art form, functions as a medium for self-understanding and existential exploration while simultaneously posing a psycho logical challenge that requires balance between external expectations and internal autonomy.
