Abstract

The primary motif of Wim Wenders' films has traditionally centered on wandering along roads and crossing boundaries. However, Hirayama, the protagonist ofPerfect Days(2023), presents a major shift in this paradigm. As a public toilet cleaner in Tokyo, he does not engage in purposeless roaming; in stead, he secures personal autonomy and subjectivity within a fixed living environment through re petitive daily routines. This study employs Walter Benjamin’s concept of the flâneur as its theoretical framework to examine how Hirayama maintains his subjectivity within the contemporary urban system. Hirayama attains a detached observational position through anonymity and distance, and re interprets the commodified city through acts of collecting—such as photographing with a film camera and using cassette tapes. His cyclical routines reject the linear temporality of capitalism, while his aesthetic reappropriation of functional urban spaces transforms toilets, cars, and parks into sites of contemplation and interior reflection. Moreover, his consistent rituals—waking up, selecting a canned drink, listening to music upon seeing the Tokyo Skytree—embody Benjamin’s notion of the shock-ab sorbing mechanism of the flâneur. Even when confronted with unpredictable events in the city, such as a coworker’s resignation, unexpected encounters, or the sale of his tapes, Hirayama restores equi librium by returning to his routines. This stands in contrast to the event-driven dramas of conven tional cinema, offering instead a mode of being grounded in repetition and sensory perception. Ultimately, Hirayama can be understood as a modern flâneur who sustains sensory depth without physical mobility. Though he remains in place, his sensibility wanders; though he is silent, he reads the city’s textures. By foregrounding this figure, the study expands the conventional notion of the no madic wanderer into that of the “settled wanderer,” and proposes a new model of cinematic character formation mediated by sensation and affect beyond event-centered narrative structures.
