Abstract

It seems that the central teachings of Upaniṣads and Buddhism are totally different to the extent that the one is based on the concept of ātman (self) whereas the other on the doctrine of anatta (no-self). In this paper, I wish to suggest that Upaniṣads and Buddhism are in accord with their own understanding of absolute reality from the viewpoint of mysticism. How can Buddha’s anatta possibly have something in common with ātman of the Upanishad? Buddhism agrees with Upaniṣads in that both of them head toward ‘nothingness’ of ‘I-ness.’ As long as there is ‘the I,’ no-self cannot come out, and ‘This Atman is Brahman’ or ‘non-duality’ (advaita) cannot be realized. It is not until the ego turns into zero that ‘tat tvam asi’ (Thou art That) in the Upaniṣads can become a reality. As long as ‘I’ exists, ‘He’ does not exist; when the I becomes zero, ‘He’ turns up. For example, if A and B are in the relationship of non-duality, it means there is neither A nor B. Even when only one of the two exists, the relationship of non-duality cannot come into existence. That is because ‘non-duality’ is not different from ‘unity of being’ or ‘pratītyasamutpāda’.
