Abstract
The purpose of the present work is a study of the concept of Yoga(meditation) presented in the Medieval upaniṣads. The upaniṣads are the concluding parts of the Veda, and are called the Veda -anta, or the end of the veda. They are the culmination of the Vedic teaching and wisdom. As Dr. S. Radhakrishnan observed, "the aim of the upaniṣads is not so much as to reach philosophical truth as to bring peace and freedom to the anxious human spirit(Indian Philosophy, Vol.1 p.138)". So the upaniṣads do not contain any philosophic synthesis as such, of the type of the system of Aristotle or of Kant or of Śaṇkara. The Mukthikopaniṣad gives the number of the upaniṣads as 108. But thirteen uapniṣads are regarded as important and authentic. These are Bṛhadāraṇyaka, Chāndogya, Aitareya, Kauṣītaki, Taittirīya, Kena, Iśa, Kaṭha, Muṇḍaka, Prashna, Śvetāśvatara, Maitrāyanī and Maṇḍūkya. The medieval upaniṣds are Kaṭha, Muṇḍaka, Prashna and Śvetāśvatara. We may select two upaniṣds - the Kaṭha and Śvetāśvatara, for our present purpose. The theory of yoga derives from them. The word 'yoga' literally means 'union', i,e., spiritual union of the individual soul with the Universal Soul and is used in this sense in the Medieval Upniṣads. The Kaṭha upaniṣad says : Know the Self as the lord of the chariot and the body as, verily, the chariot, know the intellect as the charioteer and the mind as, verily, the reins(Ⅰ.3.3). The Ātman is imprisoned in a particular body, mind and understanding, which create in the individual ignorance of his own infinitude and of his oneness with all beings. Mokṣa can be attained by yoga. Mokṣa is the liberation from this prison house of individuality. The Śvetāśvatara says : When by means of the real nature of his self he sees as by a lamp here the real nature of Brahman, by knowing God who is unborn, steadfast, free from all natures, he is released from all fetters(Ⅱ.15). Hence the Yogī is the ideal ascetic who curbs his passions and maintains calmness in heat and cold, in joy and sorrow, in honor and dishonor. A yogī is a sthitaprajῆa- one firmly rooted in higher reason and unmoved by the pairs of opposites. According to the upniṣads God and the soul are fundamentally identical. One of the Mahāvakyas, the great utterance of the upaniṣads, are 'Tattvāmasi', 'Thou are that' and 'Ahambrahmāsmī', 'I am the absolute'. In other words there is the same divine spirit in every human being. The upaniṣads with their message of universal spiritual religion represent the first renaissance in Indian philosophy.
