십이연기 전개설 비판- 『DN 15경』을 중심으로 -

슈미트하우젠(L. Schmithausen)을 비롯한 유럽의 주요 연구자들은 十二緣起 展開說을 주장한다. 슈미트하우젠은 『Mahā-nidānasutta』(『DN 15경』)에 六入處 가 ‘觸, 受’에 내재되고, ‘無明, 行’이 결여되어 있기 때문에, 9지 혹은 10지형식이 십이연기 전개의 중간 단계를 보여주는 결정적인 증거라고 주장한다. 하지만 그는『DN 15경』의 특성과 후반부를 전혀 고려하지 않았다.『DN 15경』의 특성을 고려할 때, 육입처가 촉, 수에 내재된 것은 개인의 苦뿐만 아니라 개인들 사이에서 나타나는 다툼, 분쟁과 같은 세상의 苦를 함께 해명하기위한 것이다. 육입처가 개인들에게 내재되지 않으면, 동일한 사태에 대해 개인들이 왜 서로 각각 다른 느낌과 갈애와 취착을 가지는가를 설명할 수 없다. 따라서 『DN 15경』에서 육입처를 개인들에게 내재시킨 이 부분은 오히려붓다의 정합성이 돋보이는 부분이다. 또한『DN 15경』에서 무명과 행이 표면적으로는 드러나지 않은 이유는 후반부의 설명이 전반부의 識과 名色이 순환되는 근본원인을 해명하고 있기 때문이다. 후반부는 三界를 중심으로 설명된다. 삼계는 有爲에 의해 조작된 것이다. 行은 유위를 통해 삼계를 조작하며결국 식과 명색의 조건이 된다. 삼계를 벗어나는 것은 般若(paññā)이고 반야를 알지 못하는 것이 삼계의 想(saññā)이다. 무명은 상을 통해 無明觸으로 발생되기 때문에, 무명을 연하여 행이 있게 된다. 『DN 15경』의 연기에 대한 설명은 십이연기와 다른 설명이 아니며 십이연기의 내적 체계성을 바탕으로 나타난 설명인 것이다. 따라서 십이연기 전개설의 ‘도입’(inception)은 재고되어야 한다.
Abstract
Lambert Schmithausen representatively asserts the ‘evolution theory’ (展開說) about paṭiccasamuppāda(十二緣起) with some major researchers of Europe. He argues that 9-links or 10-links is a decisive evidence to reveal the middle stage of 12-links, because saḷāyatana(六入處) is inherent in phassa(觸), vedanā(受), and avijja(無名), saṅkhāra(行) is lacked in Mahānidānasutta(『DN 15』). However, he tries to interpret them without any consideration for the second half about 『DN 15』. To the consideration of a unique characteristics of 『DN 15』, the coherence have to be set out so in a way that saḷāyatana is inherent in phassa and vedanā, as it is to clarify why it occur dukkha(苦) such as the discord and dispute in world(世間) including dukkha of individual. If saḷāyatana isn’t with inherent in phassa and vedanā, it is not able to account for why individuals take different vedanā, tanha(渴愛) and upādāna(取) each other in same things. Also the second part is to suggest on the basis of tidhātau (三界) that is manipulated by saṅkhata(有爲), which means for saṅkhāra to be qualification of viññāṇa and nāmarūpa in the first part.; paññā(般若) means deep insight into tidhātau and saññā(想) is not to aware it.; saṅkhāra is required avijja because avijja arises out of avijjāsamphassa(無 明觸) by saññā. To conclude, the inception of the theory of the process of development, offered by Schmithausen is not suitable to understand paṭiccasamuppāda, for it has a coherent system that can not be seen with that presupposition.
