Abstract
In this study, I argue that the essence of Ganhwaseon is “practice guidance depending on one’s religious capability,” which may conflict with efforts to popularize Ganhwaseon within the contemporary Korean Buddhist order. To support this thesis, I outline the general perception of masters in Seon Buddhism and then review Gaofeng Yuanmiao (高峰原妙, 1238-1295)’s practicing process described in Chanyao (禪要, Essentials of Chan) to reexamine master’s role and importance in Ganhwaseon practice. The terms representing spiritual masters in the Seon sect, such as Josa (祖師, “patriarch”), Seonjisik (善知識, “virtuous teacher”), and Jongsa (宗師, “eminent master”), include meaning as an ideal character with an insight of enlightenment beyond any discrimination. The masters employ various methods and instruct their disciples to experience enlightenment firsthand. Some texts in Chanyao provide a detailed description of this type of master’s practice guidance. Gaofeng concentrated on hwadu under the instruction of two masters, Duanqiao Miaolun (斷橋妙倫, 1201-1261) and Xueyan Zuqin (雪巖祖欽, 1215-1287), and in particular, Xueyan played a decisive role throughout Gaofeng’s practice. He presented a new hwadu to Gaofeng and encouraged him through continuous inspection. Once Gaofeng experienced enlightenment later, Xueyan formally approved the disciple’s attainment. This demonstrates how a master accurately assesses a disciple’s capabilities and provides guidance, highlighting the crucial role of the master’s guidance in Ganhwaseon. However, there is a concern that the individual-specific guidance method of the traditional Ganhwaseon could decline due to popularization, which is aimed at an unspecified population. Prior to popularization, it seems necessary to revitalize the function of master’s practice guidance and find a way to bridge the gap between the two. In that sense, addressing the issues raised in this study can help determine the direction of Ganhwaseon’s popularization.
