Abstract
This study aims to provide foundational insights for the development of multicultural youth support policies by empirically analyzing how the effect of Korean language proficiency on school life adjustment via self-esteem varies according to national identity. The data were drawn from the second wave of the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Survey (MAPS 2) conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute of Korea, focusing on 318 foreign-born adolescents. The data were analyzed using SPSS Ver. 25.0 and the PROCESS macro Ver. 4.2. Statistical techniques employed include frequency analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and moderated mediation analysis. The findings of this study are as follows. First, significant positive correlations were observed among Korean language proficiency, self-esteem, national identity, and school life adjustment. Second, national identity was found to moderate the mediating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between Korean language proficiency and school life adjustment. Specifically, national identity strengthened the indirect effect of Korean language proficiency on school life adjustment through self-esteem. Based on these results, the study offers policy recommendations for supporting the school adaptation of multicultural adolescents.
