Abstract
This study analyzes Korean representatives’ sponsorship behavior. Multiple factors explain why some lawmakers introduce more or fewer bills than others. This study argues that constituency variables affect the number of sponsorships. In particular, electoral security and voter turnout interactively influence representatives’ sponsorship behavior. Voter turnout rates positively condition the effects of electoral margin on the number of sponsorships. To test the argument, I examine how many bills each lawmaker introduces in the 18th Korean National Assembly. According to the regression results, representatives from competitive electoral districts tend to propose more bills as voter turnout rates increase. In contrast, where turnout rates are low, electoral competitiveness tends to affect the number of sponsorships in a negative manner.
