Abstract

Oral history is a means of studying history through the process of remembering and testifying about individual experiences and is a qualitative methodology that accumulates historical data that has not been preserved through written records. Compared to the industrial influence of Korean comics, which have a history of over 100 years, as cultural content, systematic preservation of historical records and academic research are insufficient. In particular, research on the history of comics is more difficult due to a lack of historical materials, lack of systematic organization of research materials, and shortage of researchers. Since the establishment of the Department of Comics at universities in the mid-1990s, researchers have been steadily produced through master's and doctoral programs, but academic achievements are still weak, and the history of comics, which is the root of comics research, has not been systematically studied. In this situation, oral records of elder cartoonists, which are drawing attention as a methodology for collecting cartoon materials, are valuable historical materials that contain testimonies of recording Korean comics from the personal life histories collected through interviews. In the history of Korean comics, where historical records are weak, historical research through qualitative research methodology has important meaning. Oral records are personal materials that testify to personal experiences, but they are also records that supplement the gaps in documentary materials and coexist with the life of the storyteller and the context of the times. Up until now, the collection of oral records of Korean comics has been conducted as an oral record project through public institutions. The collection of oral records by public institutions supports the process of oral records of elder cartoonists and presents the context of the times in the records collected, thereby establishing a plan to publicize oral records, thereby listening to various voices of cartoon history that have been excluded from mainstream culture and giving meaning to them through the oral life histories of cartoonists. This paper will examine the meaning and necessity of research on the oral history of Korean comics and summarize the research methodology and status of the oral history recording of former comics currently underway as part of oral history research on comics. Also, based on this, we would like to derive tasks to expand oral recording research in the future.
