Abstract
This study examines the evolution of historical assessments of Cao Cao (曹操), recognized as one of the most complex and emblematic figure portrayals in Chinese literary history. By analyzing the duality in Cao Cao’s portrayal in Chen Shou’s (陳壽) Records of the Three Kingdoms and Pei Songzhi’s (裴松之) commentary, this research explores how political contexts and legitimacy debates influence character assessment in historical writing. While previous studies have primarily focused on Cao Cao’s literary image or historical facts, this research distinguishes itself by concentrating on the ‘evolutionary process’ of Cao Cao’s assessment and its socio-political background. The formation of Cao Cao’s image was influenced by various strata and aspects of traditional Chinese culture. In historians’ records, Cao Cao’s image was already highly complex, and under the influence of traditional political culture, he gradually transformed from a historical hero to a cunning minister. This duality in Cao Cao’s portrayal serves as an important case study demonstrating how legitimacy debates and the political demands of each era are reflected in historical narratives. Through an examination of the changing assessment of Cao Cao as a historical figure, this study empirically analyzes the influence of political contexts and legitimacy debates on historical writing, contributing to a deeper understanding of the complexity and multi-layered nature of historical perception. This provides significant implications for modern historical writing and historical education.
