Abstract

This paper reinterprets the military notion of “command decision” through Heidegger’s concept of resoluteness (Entschlossenheit). Whereas conventional discourse reduces military decision-making to the commander’s active will or executive capability, Heideggerian resoluteness is grounded in a passive letting-be (Gelassenheit) that responds to the call of being by stepping away from the average everydayness of “the they” (das Man). On this view, a genuine decision is not an intention to act but a “decision not to act”—a restraint that avoids unnecessary intervention so that beings may disclose themselves. This perspective reshapes how command, soldier leadership, and organizational culture can be understood. A commander’s decision appears not in assertive action but in restraint and waiting; soldier leadership requires balancing respect for individual backgrounds with the military’s essential purpose. The formalism and habitual practices of military culture likewise reflect the dominance of “the they.” By redefining command decision as a form of releasement that preserves existence and opens existential possibilities, this study offers a new philosophical framework for reconsidering military leadership and organizational culture.
