Abstract

The Johannine symbolic universe is dualistic in nature and it is dominated by opposites, such as light and darkness, spirit and flesh, life and death. In Jungian language, those symbols are phenomena in this world which point to the world above. The symbols which are important in the Fourth Gospel are those of light and bread and water. With these symbols Jesus reveals himself through "I am" sayings, such as "I am the light of the world"(8:12), "I am the bread of life"(6:35, 48) etc. When those symbols are considered, it is important to understand how they functioned in the literature of the day, both Jewish and Hellenistic. From a Jewish background, the symbol of bread would have evoked numerous associations: the Passover meal, the manna, and the Law etc. So the symbol of bread was a symbol which spoke of the nourishment which God provides to the people. In Jungian language, it was the nourishment which the Self supplies to consciousness from the unconscious. When Jesus says that he is the bread of life, the bread that comes down from heaven, he becomes that nourishment from the unconscious. Light is a universal symbol, representing truth, revelation, or consciousness. The hebrew Scripture associated light with both Israel and the Law(Isa 49:6; Psa 119:105). From a Hellenistic background, however, the symbol of light means a essential power which provides to the people some unconscious energy like a symbol of the sun or a symbol of fire. When Jesus says that he is the light of the world, the light that comes down from heaven, he becomes that power from the unconscious. Johannine community members had felt alienation from the Jewish community or from the early Catholicism. The community's situation appears to be symbolized in the experience of the blind man who, after being healed by Jesus, is put out of the synagogue by the Jewish authorities(9:1-41). The evangelist reclaimed symbols of bread and light from the Jewish heritage, in which they referred to the Law, and refocused them on Jesus. The symbols provided psychic grounding for the Johannine Christians in the alienation. The bread of life, the light of the world was not found in the Law but in Jesus, the Johannine community's symbol of the Self. Jesus is the light of the world because he opened the eyes of a man born blind. And he is the bread of life because he fed the crowd by five loaves of bread and two fish and because he lays down his life for his flock and gives his flesh for the life of the world.
