본 연구는 세계 종교의 중심으로서 신 혹은 하나님을 제시하는 신중심 혹은 실재중심적 종교다원주의를 다루고 있다. 타 종교와의 진지한 대화에 있어서 주된 장애물이 기독교의 그리스도중심주의라는 사실을 인식한 힉은 그리스도의 성육신을 문자가 아닌 상징적 진실이라고 하는 재해석을 통해 신중심주의를 제시한다. 힉의 신중심주의는 기독교, 유대교, 이슬람교와 같은 아브라함적 종교와는 잘 어울리지만, 힌두교, 불교, 유교와 같은 무신론적 종교와는 문제가 있다. 그래서 힉은 거룩하신 분, 궁극자, 초월자, 궁극적 실체 등과 같은 여러 가능한 이름들을 생각한 끝에 세계의 모든 종교체계들을 모두 섭렵하기 위해 실재라 불리는 또 다른 궁극적 실체를 제시한다. 힉의 후기 저술들에서 세계 종교의 중심이 신에서 실재로 바뀐 것을 알 수 있는데, 특별히 그것은 『종교의 해석』(1989)이라는 자신의 책에서 분명히 드러난다. 필자의 연구의 초점은 힉의 신 혹은 실재인데, 그들이 동일한 존재인지, 그들이 기독교의 하나님과 무슨 관련이 있는지, 그리고 그 실재를 알 수 있기는 한 것인지 등을 다루고 있다. 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 1) 힉의 실재는 그의 신의 다른 이름이다. 2) 힉의 신 혹은 실재는 성경의 하나님과는 다르다. 3) 공통기반으로 상정된 힉의 실재는 자기모순적인데, 결국 다른 모든 궁극적 실재 위에 군림하기 때문이다. 4) 인간 경험 너머에 존재하는 힉의 실재는 실제적 존재가 아니라 필연적 가정에 의해 붙여진 이름일 뿐이다.
Abstract
This study deals with John Hick’s theocentric or realocentric religious pluralism, which presents God or the Real as the center of world religions. Knowing that the Christocentrism of Christianity is a major obstacle for a serious dialogue with other religions, Hick presents theocentrism through the reinterpretation of Christ’s Incarnation as a symbolic truth rather than a literal one. Hick’s theocentrism works fine with the major Abrahamic religions, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam; however it has problems with nontheistic religions, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Thus Hick suggests another ultimate reality, called ‘the Real,’ to deal with all religious systems of the world, after thinking of many possible names for the reality, such as the Divine, the Ultimate, the Transcendent, the Ultimate Reality, etc. In Hick’s later writings the use of a term to describe the center of religions is changed from God to the Real, particularly in his book An Interpretation of Religion (1989). The focus of my study is Hick’s God, or the Real, whether they are the same, whether they have any connection with Christian God, and how we know the Real at all. I conclude my study as follows. 1) Hick’s Real is another name for his God. 2) Hick’s God, or the Real, is not the same as the God of the Bible. 3) Hick’s Real, as a common ground of all, is self-contradictory, because it is over all other ultimate beings. 4) Hick’s Real, who is beyond human experience, is not real; rather it is a mere name presented through a necessary postulate.
