30년 전쟁(1618-1648)은 합스부르크 왕조가 통치하던 보헤미아에서 프로테스탄트와 가톨릭 세력 사이의 종교 전쟁으로서 시작되었다. 1618년 5월 23일 프라하 창문 투척 사건이 30년 전쟁의 시작이라고 간주 되고 있다. 1609년 황제 루돌프 2세가 보헤미아의 종교의 자유를 허락하는 “황제 칙서”를 공포하였으나, 1618년 황제 마티아스가 이를 시행하지 않고, 그의 후계자 페르디난트 2세가 보헤미아에 가톨릭 신앙을 강요하게 되면서, 보헤미아의 프로테스탄트 세력이 반란을 일으켰던 것이다. 그러나 점차 덴마크, 스웨덴, 프랑스가 신성 로마 제국의 프로테스탄트 세력과 결합하여 참전하게 되면서, 가톨릭 합스부르크 왕조의 세력은 약화되 었다. 이후 가톨릭 합스부르크 왕조와 이에 저항하는 프로테스탄트 세력 사이의 전쟁은 종교 전쟁의 특성을 상실하고, 권력 균형을 추구하는 국가 간의 영토 전쟁으로 변모해 갔다.1648년 베스트팔렌 조약을 통하여 30년 전쟁이 종식되었으며, 프랑스가 유럽 대륙의 강국으로 부상하였다. 종교적인 사안과 관련하여, 베스트팔렌 평화 조약은 1555년 체결된 아우크스부르크 종교 평화 협약의 의미를 확대하여, 로마-가톨릭과 루터주의자들과 함께 칼빈주의자들을 포용했다. 베스트팔렌 평화 조약은 정치적 권력과 가톨릭 신앙의 복원을 기대했던 신성 로마 제국의 황제의 희망을 좌초시켰으며, 이를 통하여 신성 로마 제국은 수많은 독립 국가로 분열되었다. 이와 관련하여 30년 전쟁이 합스부르크 왕조의 영토 확장의 정치적 의도를 제지했다는 사실을 주목할 필요가 있다. 결론적으로 16세기 초반의 프로테스탄트 종교 개혁 운동이 30년 전쟁 기간 동안 가톨릭 교회의 정치적-경제적 영향력 을 약화시킬 수 있었던 중요한 역사적 사건이었다고 볼 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648) began as a religious war between Protestants and Catholics in the Hapsburg-ruled Kingdom of Bohemia. In 1609 Emperor Rudolf II delivered the “Letter of Majesty”, which guaranteed freedom of religion in Bohemia. But in 1618, as Emperor Mathias did not fulfill the commitment, the Protestants rebelled. The Prague defenestration was considered as the beginning of the Thirty Years’ War. Emperor Ferdinand II as Matthias’ successor, who tried to impose religious uniformity on his domains, forced citizens of the empire to adhere to Roman Catholicism. Gradually, however, Denmark, Sweden and France joined the Protestants in order to undermine the power of the Catholic Habsburg Empire. The struggle between the Hapsburg and its opponents ceased to be the conflict of two religions and became the struggle of nations for a balance of power. The Peace of Westphalia of 1648 ended the Thirty Years’ War and established France as the predominant power on the European continent. In religious affairs, the Peace of Westphalia expanded the Peace of Augsburg of 1555 to include Calvinists, as well as Catholics and Lutherans. The Peace of Westphalia ended the Holy Roman emperor’s hope of restoring both his own political power and the Catholic faith throughout the empire. It is important to note that the Thirty Years’ War effectively checked Habsburg expansion. The Holy Roman Empire was fragmented into a number of virtually independent states. In conclusion, the Protestant Reformation in the beginning of the 16th century was a momentous event and political force breaking the political and economic power of the Catholic church inr the Thirty Years’ War.
