이 논문의 목적은 가스통 바슐라르(Gaston Bachelard)의 ‘물질적(질료적) 상상력’(materialistic imagination) 개념을 활용하여, 요한복음의 이미지들을 분석하는 것이다. 바슐라르는 고대 그리스에서 만물의 근원 물질로 주목했던 4원소, 즉 공기(Air), 불(Fire), 물(Water), 흙(Earth)을 물질 적(질료적) 상상력(materialistic imagination)의 원형들(archetypes)로 보고, 다양한 문학 작품에서 이 물질적(질료적) 상상력이 어떻게 전개되는지 분석하였다. 본 연구는 이러한 바슐라르의 통찰을 요한복음 해석에 적용한 것이다. 요한복음에는 공기, 불, 물, 흙의 네 원소들의 질료적 특성으로 이루어진 다양한 이미지들이 사용되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 특별히 각 원소의 이미지들은 예수 묘사에 특별한 방식으로 적용되었다. 공기적 이미지 들은 예수의 기원을 묘사하는 데 사용되었고, 불의 이미지들은 예수의 사명을 드러내주었다. 물의 이미지들은 예수에 의해서 도래할 새로운 세계를 묘사하는 데 활용되었다. 흙의 이미지들은 예수가 사랑했고, 구원하려고 했던 세상을 그려내었다. 1세기 그레코-로만 세계에서 탄생한 요한복음은 예수가 만물의 근원이 되신다는 것을 우주적 근원 물질로 여겨졌던 공기, 불, 물, 흙의 상상력을 통해서 증언하고 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the images of the Fourth Gospel using Gaston Bachelard’s concept of the materialistic imagination. Bachelard viewed the four elements which were regarded as the source material of all things in ancient Greece, namely air, fire, water and earth as the archetypes of materialistic imagination, and analyzed how this materialistic imagination develops in various literary works. This study applies these insights to the Fourth Gospel. In the Fourth Gospel, we can see that various images are used of the material characteristics of the four elements(air, fire, water, and earth.) In particular, the images of each element were applied in a special way to description of Jesus. The aerial images were used to describe the origin of Jesus, and the images of fire revealed Jesus’ mission. The images of water were used to describe a new world to come by Jesus. The images of the earth depicted the world that Jesus loved and tried to save. The Fourth Gospel, written in the 1st century Greco-Roman World, testifies that Jesus is the source of all things by using the imagination of air, fire, water, and earth, which it is thought of as the universal source material.
