Abstract
This paper deals with how Christians understand a pragmatic idea of social justice by interpreting John Dewey's conception of justice and democracy in terms of Reinhold Niebuhr's Christian realism in the age of so-called moderate pragmatism. Dewey believes that social injustice results mainly from economic bipolarization caused by laissez-faire capitalism. Social injustice prevents citizens' self-growth and self-realization. Injustice also makes it difficult for citizens to cultivate a democratic way of life in a community. Dewey suggests that citizens should establish the Great Community in which free social inquiry, civic participation, and communication are guaranteed. Though Dewey and Niebuhr differ from each other in religious ideas, Dewey's social and political understanding is similar to Niebuhr's in some aspects. They both believes that laissez-faire capitalism brings about social injustice. Niebuhr and Dewey also regard democracy as the key to social problems. Despite their religious differences, Dewey complements Niebuhr by emphasizing the importance of "how" and the possibility of citizens to pursue a democratic way of life.
