Abstract
It is certain that justice is what most people dream for themselves as well as for the global world. Then what is justice? And where is justice? Is it only a human ideal or imagination that we could only wish for and never achieve? If we can achieve it, though partially, what should Christians, the Disciples of Christ, do? In what way do our spiritual resources inspire our thinking and action for such a loftiest goal in human relationship? These questions have been raised not only to Christians of today but also to all Christians through the ages. Reinhold Niebuhr, who dominated theological discourse at mid-20th century in the United States, is one of those theologians who have seriously invested their whole lives to examine the tragic situation of injustices and the demands of Christian calling for justice in human relationship. Although Niebuhr declined to identify himself unequivocally as a theologian, he has in fact written inspiring theological books and articles with the aim of defending and justifying the Christian faith in a secular world. In this paper I want to delve into Reinhold Niebuhr’s theory of justice to see how Niebuhr answered the question of justice and how we, as responsible Christians, can learn from him for our action in the world today. However, the purpose of this paper lies neither in suggesting a comprehensive exploration of Niebuhr’s theory of justice nor in making a hasty evaluation on it, rather it lies in understanding his notion of justice more concisely and accurately in a sympathetic way. In order to appreciate the nature and magnitude of Niebuhr’s theory of justice, this paper begins with a brief exploration of Niebuhr’s understanding of justice focusing on the concept, the principle, and the structure of justice (section I I). Then, in next section, I examine how much his view of human nature and destiny supports to his theory of justice (section I I I). Finally, I present some contributions and limitations of Niebuhr’s theory of justice (section I V). I conclude that Niebuhr’s reservation and caution in our social behaviors should not be forgotten if we do not want to be trapped in a naïve attitude or despair when things do not come out as we have expected.
