존 듀이의 자유주의 개념의 재구성: 한국 사회와 교육에 주는 시사

이 논문은 듀이의 자유 개념을 통하여 민주주의 사회와 교육에서 바람직한 자유주의 원리에 대한 이해를 돕는데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 변화하는 시대에 적합하며 민주주의를 강화할 수 있는 개념으로 듀이가 재구성한자유주의 철학과 그것을 그가 교육에 어떻게 적용하였는지에 대한 논의와 함께 듀이의 사상이 우리 사회와 교육에 줄 수 있는 의미와 시사점을 살펴보았다. 듀이는 19세기 자유방임적 자유주의가 보통 사람들의 삶과 민주주의를 위협하고 있다고 보았으며, 이에 민주주의를 강화할 수 있는 새로운 형태의 자유주의 철학에 대한 이해와 실천의 필요성을 역설하였다. 듀이는 고전적 자유주의가 가져온 여러 문제들을 비판하면서도 자유, 개성, 지성과 같은 자유주의의 주요 개념들을 재구성 하고자 하였으며, 이것은 그가 이러한 자유주의의 가치들이 개인에게 뿐만아니라 세대와 세대를 거치며 진보하는 사회를 위하여 필요하다고 느꼈기 때문이다. 당시 자유주의의 문제에 대한 처방과 민주주의의 강화를 위해 듀이가 재정의 한 자유주의 철학은 최근 새로운 정부의 출범으로 민주주의에대한 열망과 희망이 더욱 강하게 일어나고 있는 우리사회에 매우 적절하며 의미 있어 보인다. 연구자는 듀이의자유주의 철학이 우리사회와 교육에 주는 의미를 다음의 세 가지로 나누어 살펴보았다: 1) 경쟁적 사회 환경과제도 하에서 파생된 이기적 개인주의를 극복하도록 도우며 2) 교육이 나아가야 할 방향을 제시하고 3) 민주주의를 강화하고 민주적 교육을 강화한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to understand the principles of liberalism for democratic society and education through John Dewey's concept of liberalism. For this, this paper attempts to examine Dewey’s philosophy of liberalism and how it was applied to education. Moreover, this paper tries to understand what significance Dewey’s view of liberalism would have for contemporary Korean society and education. When Dewey saw that laissez-faire liberalism in the 19th century was threatening democracy and the lives of ordinary people, he started to emphasize the importance of understanding and practicing a new form of liberal philosophy that can strengthen democracy. Specifically, Dewey criticized the problems that came from classical liberalism and tried to reconstruct the primary concepts of liberalism such as freedom, individuality, and intelligence. He believed that these values were needed not only for individuals but for a society that progresses from one generation to another. This paper discusses the specific applications of Dewey’s philosophy of liberalism to contemporary Korean society and education in the following three parts: Dewey’s philosophy of liberalism 1) Helps overcome selfish individualism under the condition of a competitive environment, 2) Proposes the direction that education should be taking, 3) Strengthens democracy and democratic education.
