Abstract
The present article aims to reflect the role and responsibility of ministers in the modern society through the status and roles of priest in the Old Testament. For this purpose, it briefly reviews the history of priesthood of ancient Israel and examines the prophet Malachi’s criticism on cultic priests in Malachi 1:6-2:9. The biblical texts on priest shows that there are three main priest families in the Old Testament: Aaronites, Levites, Zadokites. Unlike the common prejudice, the priests not only took charge of the cult, performing sacrifices, but also involved in interpreting and teaching the Torah, collecting tithe, and even military duties in relation to the temple. Their status and roles had been changed according to different historical stage. The fate of the temple played major role in defining the relations between the priests. During the early Israelite society, priests were not necessarily from the tribe of Levi. But from the period of Monarchy, all the priests were categorized under the Levites, which refer to all kinds of ministry workers in relation to the cult or temple. During the monarchy, the Zadokite priests served in Jerusalem temple; the Levite priests, the local cults, until the reform of Josiah. The centralization of the cult by Josiah’s reform threatened the Levites priests who lost their local cult. Their role seemed to focus more on teaching than cultic performance since then. In the post-exilic period, Zadokite priests were conflicted with Levi priests and took the authority over the cult and the Temple. The Levite priests work to interpret and teach the Torah and serve other ministries in the Temple. The prophet Malachi addressed critical debate against the priest. The prophet used an inclusive term for all priests, the Levites, that diminishes the division among priests. He proclaimed that the true priesthood is to carry right sacrifice to God and to teach and live according to the Torah. The prophetic proclamation against cultic priests who concerned their own welfare and authority may pose a warning to the modern ministers who ruined the ministerial authority through their attempt to privatization of the church, financial corruption, or sexual harrassment. It reminded all modern ministers that the fundamental role of minister is to stand on the word of God and lead God’s people to walk with God.
