Abstract
The ḥerem command in Dt 7:2 as directed to the Israelites, contains the directive that Israel should annihilate the Canaanites living in the land into which the Israelites are moving. However, the various commands including the prohibition on making covenants and inter-marrying with the Canaanites follow the ḥerem command and do not seem to be in harmony with this command. That is, if Israel successfully executed the herem command, there would be no one with whom Israel could make covenant or have marriage relationships with. In other words, had the Israelites followed these commands to annihilate the Cannites the additional commands prohibiting marriage and covenants would be unnecessary. The obviously illogical relationship between the ḥerem command and the following commands needs to be reconsidered and this is the focus of the present study which was begun several months ago. This study proposes that the focus of the commands in Dt. 7:1-5 is not only upon the ḥerem command, but also on the series of commands to destroy altar, pillars, Asherim, and graven images. The ḥerem command and those destruction commands presuppose the context of a war between Israel and the Canaanites. However, they are different in the fact that the former is impossible to execute and the latter is possible to do only after the victory. Therefore, the exiled Deuteronomist found the reason for the fall and the exile of both Israel and Judah in the fact that the Israelites worshiped the other gods. The editor of Deuteronomy 7:1-5 indicates that the real reason for the fall and the exile of the Israelites was that they did not annihilate the Canaanites or destroy all their graven images when they first came into the land. They did not engage in such radical behavior and this led them into the fall and the exile. After the exile, the editor of Deuteronomy added the awkward looking ḥerem command in chapter 7 and highlighted the fact that Israel should have killed all the other gods by destroying all the graven images.
