본 연구의 목적은 ‘헤렘, 특히 여리고의 헤렘을 어떻게 이해할 것인가?’라는 질문에 답하고자 하는 것이다. 논의의 전반부에서는 성서학자들이 시도해 온 헤렘에 관한 다양한 이해를 개관한다. 여리고의 헤렘에 대한 성서학자들의 이해는 다음과 같이 정리할 수 있다. 헤렘을 (1) 이스라엘의 원시성으로서 이해하는 것, (2) 하나님의 진노로서 이해하는 것, (3) 순종의 모범으로서 이해하는 것, 그리고 마지막으로 (4) 여리고 전투의 역사성을 의심함으로써 헤렘 논의를 피하려는 것이다. 이런 시도들은 헤렘을 역사적으로 이해하는 데는 도움이 되지만 현대인의 윤리적 감수성을 만족시키지는 못한다. 따라서 논의의 후반부에서는 난해 본문을 읽고 이해하는 것과 관련하여 구약학자 다르의 제안을 활용한다. 즉, 우리는 내러티브를 질문으로 바꾸고 성서의 본문들로 하여금 서로 대화하게 함으로써 헤렘을 이해하기 위한 실마리를 찾을 수 있는 것이다. 헤렘 내러티브에 질문을 던지고 헤렘 기사의 대화 상대를 찾음으로써, 우리는 헤렘이 성경이 보여 주는 그림의 전부가 아님을 알게 된다. 실로 여리고 전투의 헤렘은 헤렘 일반을 대표하지 않으며, 헤렘이 여리고 전투 기사의 전부도 아니며, 헤렘을 명령하시는 하나님이 성서가 계시해 주는 하나님 모습의 전부도 아니다. 헤렘은 어렵고 무거운 주제이지만, 그것과 씨름함으로써 성서에 관한, 그리고 신앙 공동체를 위한, 더 깊은 깨달음을 얻을 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper attempts to answer the question of how to understand ḥērem, especially the ḥērem of Jericho. The first half of the paper surveys different understandings of ḥērem among biblical scholars. Bible scholars have understood the ḥērem of Jericho (1) as Israel’s primitiveness, (2) as God’s wrath, and (3) as the model of obedience; they have also tried to evade the issue (4) by doubting the historicity of the relevant biblical material. These attempts may be helpful for understanding ḥērem historically, but they cannot satisfy the moral sensitivity of the moderns. Accordingly, the second half of the paper exploits Hebrew Bible scholar Katheryn Pfisterer Darr’s suggestion about teaching difficult texts. By adopting her suggestion that narratives should be turned into problems and different biblical texts should debate with each oth¬er, we can establish a foothold for understanding ḥērem narratives. By asking questions about ḥērem narratives and by making other biblical texts have con¬versations with them, we realize that ḥērem is only one part of a bigger bibli¬cal picture. Indeed, the ḥērem of Jericho does not represent ḥērem in general; ḥērem is not what the narrative of the battle of Jericho is all about; and the God who commands ḥērem is not the whole picture of the God revealed by the Bible. Ḥērem is a burdensome and difficult topic, but wrestling with it can lead the faith community into a deeper appreciation of the Bible.
