Abstract

This study examines the effects of home ownership and changes in house prices on political attitudes in South Korea. Despite the hypothesized offsetting relationship between welfare and housing, we find that political attitudes do not vary as much between homeowners and non-homeowners as differences in welfare attitudes, nor do they respond significantly to price changes. The relatively long life-cycle nature of homeownership and the intense two-party competition in the U.S. likely limits the wealth effect on political attitudes. Rather, it is likely that subjective political orientation is still determined by regionalism, age, income, etc. rather than home equity, which in turn influences vote choice.
