Abstract

This study analyzes how the politics of emotions operates within family narratives in the K-drama <When Life Gives You Tangerines> (I’ve Been Completely Fooled), utilizing Sara Ahmed’s theoretical framework. The findings reveal that while the drama is superficially presented as a touching family story highlighting an independent woman's life, it actually contains narrative devices that conceal and justify structural hierarchies and gender oppression through the reproduction of traditional family ideology and the internalization of emotional ethics. Despite being characterized as a “rebellious troublemaker,” the protagonist Ae-soon is repeatedly positioned passively at crucial moments, reproducing traditional feminine ideals through emotional restraint and devotion to others. This narrative structure demonstrates that emotions function not merely as psychological responses, but as socially organized ethical imperatives and means of legitimizing power. The emotional code of “being moved” particularly serves to naturalize social inequality and gender hierarchical structures by sanctioning sacrifice, silence, and endurance as emotional ethics. Analysis of the reception environment outside the drama confirms emotional cultural norms where critical perspectives are readily dismissed as “heartless” or “emotionally deficient.” This suggests that the formation of emotional consensus through shared sentiment operates as an emotional control mechanism that constrains viewers' emotional subjectivity. This study critically examines how “being moved” in K-dramas can function not simply as positive emotion but as a political apparatus that justifies structural inequality. Through this analysis, the study raises the necessity of more actively analyzing the role of emotions in popular culture research and examining the social effects produced by the ethicalization of emotions.
