Abstract

This paper aims to explain the dynamic cultural practices occurring in Korean TV reality programs which have grabbed the attention of the whole country in the last couple of years. Despite the fact that Korean reality shows are imitating American/British reality TV formats, the Korean ones are have several distinctive features differentiating them from their western counterparts. By adopting Raymond Williams’concept of the structure of feeling, this paper first contends that an underdeveloped sense of individualism in Korean society discourages reality shows that are centered on ordinary people whereas encouraging star/entertainer centered reality shows. Secondly, the competitions used as the core format in reality shows tend to be humanized or mitigated by the pseudo-family relations built among the Korean contestants. Furthermore, the paper illuminates the cultural phenomenon that competitions in the entertainment domain are framed by the collective sentiment and discourse of fairness and equality, as evidenced by Korean viewers voting for contestants from underprivileged backgrounds as the winners of audition-based reality shows. The phenomenon is named‘affective egalitarianism’. In terms of the cultural politics of reality shows, the paper will discuss Korean reality shows’ambivalent implications for democracy and neoliberalism, which have recently been the main concerns in literature about the reality show genre.
