Abstract
This study aims to identify the challenges associated with translating cultural elements that arise when Korean novels are translated into Indonesian and to explore strategies to overcome these challenges. Cultural elements in literary texts are considered some of the most challenging aspects of translation, as they require not only the selection of appropriate lexical items but also the translator's cultural competence. Although many linguists and translation scholars have discussed the definition, recognition, classification, and translation of cultural elements, a clear consensus has yet to be reached. In this study, a comparative analysis was conducted between Korean novels and their Indonesian translations, categorizing various cultural elements and analyzing the translation procedures and strategies used in the process. The results of the translation procedures were categorized into foreignization and domestication strategies, with the latter accounting for 68%, which is 36% higher than the 32% accounted for by foreignization strategies. This suggests a strong tendency to adapt the translation to the cultural context of the target audience rather than preserving the original culture.
