Abstract

The problems faced by today’s “hyper-connected society”—shaped by the free movement of capital, labor, and culture under a global economic system driven by multinational corporations and the development of global transportation and communications—can only be resolved through cooperation and action at the global societal level. Consequently, global citizenship awareness is becoming an increasingly important value and competency, and higher education institutions, both domestically and internationally, have been implementing global citizenship education in various ways. While diverse forms of global citizenship education exist, research on its effectiveness remains limited. This study empirically analyzes the impact of the 3-credit elective liberal arts course “Understanding North American Societies and their Culture”at H University on cultivating students’ global citizenship awareness. The course covers the history, culture, geography, and social systems of the United States and Canada, aiming to foster students’ comparative cultural perspectives, critical thinking, and discussion skills. This study empirically analyzes the course’s effect on enhancing students’ global citizenship awareness through identical surveys administered at the beginning and end of the semester. The survey items, based on the core values of critical thinking and empathy—the ability to see issues from another’s perspective—covered various aspects of global citizenship awareness, including knowledge, skills, attitudes, and willingness to act, and demonstrated sufficient reliability. Survey results confirmed that students’ global citizenship scores improved significantly after taking the course compared to the beginning of the semester. Notably, improvements were observed in “recognition of cultural universality,” “identification of personal strengths and weaknesses,” “discussion and communication skills,” “multicultural acceptance,” and “recognition of human dignity.”This suggests that the course was effective in cultivating students’ global citizenship. This demonstrates that humanities courses not explicitly focused on “global citizenship education” can substantially contribute to enhancing global citizenship competencies through diverse cultural experiences, discussions, and self-reflective activities.
