Abstract
This study aims to analyze the design and implementation of liberal arts courses for fostering global citizenship in the 21st century globalized era, and to explore the educational effectiveness of interdisciplinary team teaching approaches. Specifically, it seeks to present a new educational model that explores global-local connectivity through cities as mediators, integrating sociology and literature. The “Urban Humanities” course was designed with global citizenship education as its core objective, selecting nine cities both domestic and international to explore each city’s characteristics alternately from sociological and humanistic perspectives. Through a team teaching approach where two professors from sociology and literature participated on alternating weeks, students were provided with integrative thinking experiences to view the same subject through different academic lenses. To verify the course’s effectiveness, 225 free-response course evaluation comments were analyzed through qualitative content analysis based on UNESCO’s three domains of Global Citizenship Education (cognitive, socio-emotional, and behavioral). The analysis confirmed positive effects across all three domains: formation of multiple perspectives and enhanced cultural understanding in the cognitive domain, development of global connectivity and cultural empathy in the socio-emotional domain, and increased motivation for continuous learning and experiential engagement in the behavioral domain. Students recognized team teaching and interdisciplinary approaches as effective pedagogical methods and highly valued their educational significance. This study demonstrates that interdisciplinary approaches and team teaching using cities as mediators constitute an effective educational model for fostering global citizenship, holding significance as a practical approach for liberal arts education innovation in universities.
