Abstract
This study analyzes the heterogeneous effects of government spending(government consumption and investment) on private consumption by income level and age level using the vector autoregressive model and Korean data since 2000. The empirical results reveal that 1) the effect of an increase in government spending on consumption shows a huge heterogeneity by income level and age level, 2) consumption for low income level increases in response to an increase in government spending, 3) consumption for young increases in response to an increase in government spending. Because government spending have different effects on consumption by income level and age level, it is necessary to establish a policy considering these disparate responses in order to improve the economic stimulating effect of government spending.
