(Noomp, Not out of my pocket)

Abstract

This study examines citizens’ attitude toward welfare expansion, introduction of basic income, and related tax increase. It also analyzes the factors influencing these variables. In particular, with regard to tax increase, the actual amount of tax they would like to pay was examined in detail based on the experimental design. Overall, there are many respondents who would support the expansion of welfare and the introduction of basic income, and more were also in favor of the tax increase. However, if welfare expansion or the introduction of basic income is accompanied by tax increase, opposition outnumbers approval. And the phenomenon of ‘Not out of my pocket’(NOOMP) is confirmed that taxes should be paid by the rich and the corporations, not by themselves. In addition, the regression analysis finds that government trust, perception of tax burden, ideological propensity and estate assets have significant effects on the attitude toward welfare, basic income, and related tax increase.
