Abstract
In the Old Testament, the Sabbath is a commandment given as a legitimate order. The Sabbath is the basis of various feasts in Israel, and for the Israelites, ‘keeping the Sabbath’ is of great significance. The purpose of this study is to examine what the meaning of “sabbath keeping” in the prophetic books of the 6th century B.C. The nature of the Sabbath is meaningful as it is a holy day, and keeping that day is a means to keep the holiness of time. A characteristic feature of the Sabbath in Exodus 16:10-26 is the emphasis on solemn rest, while, there is no mention of the ritual point of view, and the Sabbath serves to establish itself as a sign of the Sinai covenant after Exodus 16. And also the reason for restatement of the command to keep the Sabbath at the end of Exodus 31 is to arrange the Sabbath regulations together with the provisions on the tabernacle as a place to maintain holiness as a space concept, so that the Israelites lived with awareness of the holiness of time. In the sermon of Jeremiah 17:19-27 was commanded to keep the Sabbath at the time of the impending destruction of Jerusalem due to Babylonian invasion. Unfortunately, Jeremiah's audience loses that opportunity. While, Ezekiel 20:10-26 is a passage that retrospectives the history of early Israel, who lived in the wilderness after the Exodus. In Ezekiel 20:10-26 attaches a key point that idolatry is the main cause of the failure of the Israelite to keeping the sabbath. In this respect, that passage helps future generations of Ezekiel to think about what was wrong with their ancestors' past.
