Abstract

Can Psalm 51—which contains a heartfelt confession of sin and a plea for divine forgiveness—be read through the lens of the gospel as it is revealed in the work of the Triune God? This paper seeks to explore such a reading by dividing the psalm into three theological movements: a deep awareness of sin through the recognition of God’s righteous judgment (vv. 3–6); an earnest plea for divine forgiveness arising from that awareness (vv. 1–2, 7–9, 16–17); and a prayer for restoration that includes a vow of praise and a hope for the renewal of the community (vv. 13–15, 18–19). Through a structural exegesis of the text and intertextual connections with other Old and New Testament passages, this study examines how the psalm reveals the gospel of judgment, forgiveness, and restoration as a unified work of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Verses 3–6 exemplify the psalmist’s confession of God’s just judgment and his own sinful nature. The Triune God—Father, Son, and Spirit—cooperate in revealing the righteousness of divine judgment and awakening the sinner to his guilt. This recognition of God as the righteous Judge leads the psalmist to cling solely to Him and to cry out desperately for mercy and cleansing (vv. 1–2, 7–9, 16–17). The work of forgiving sin and the sinner is ultimately fulfilled through the atoning work of Jesus Christ, wherein God’s steadfast love, mercy, and grace are made known and applied to the sinner through the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, as seen in verses 13–15 and 18–19, the Triune God’s forgiveness aims toward the restoration of true humanity (a pure heart, a steadfast spirit, a willing soul), the restoration of the image-bearing vocation of humanity, and the restoration of the church as a community that teaches God’s Word and offers Him praise. This restorative work is also accomplished through the cooperative ministry of the Triune God.
