Abstract
This study has its purpose in elucidating the divine answer to today’s situations of lament by attending to the book of Psalms. For this, we have used the compositional method which is concerned with the way that the entire Psalter was arranged to constitute a coherent whole. Our primary attention has been drawn to the arrangement of psalms in Book II and III where lament psalms and positive psalms (royal psalms, trust psalms, praise psalms, enthronement psalms, and so on) were collected in a meaningful pattern. This study has been conducted on the assumption that the positive psalms adjacent to the lament psalms in Book II and III should be reinterpreted as divine answers to the grievous situations of the post-exilic period, while containing their historical senses. Before dealing with Book II and III, we have argued that psalms 1 and 2, the introduction to the book of Psalms, show the theological intention of the entire Psalter that the believers should have the law in their mind. This finding has gained more support from our following observations of the final shape of Book II and III. First, Book II comprises five units, each containing the word ‘heart,’ or words similar to heart (42:4; 51:10; 54:6; 64:6; 69:20) in its beginning psalm. This indicates that the psalms of Book II are framed around the key-word, ‘heart.’ The divine answer to grievous situations as suggested in Book II is that we should trust in God instead of complaining of the absence of wealth; and then it emphasizes that we are required to realize ourselves as being congenitally nothing in order to trust in God. Similarly, the arrangement of the psalms in Book III displays a pattern similar to that of Book II, thus putting into relief a sense of humility that we are nothing before God. Only a humble person is able to realize the Hesed of God in such a way that he can put into practice his love toward God and inscribe the law into his mind. In a nutshell, from the structure of the arrangement of Book II and III, it may be well said that the divine answer to the grievous situations of today is that we should have the law within our mind, and that for this, we should have a genuine realization of our being as nothing.
