Abstract

Han (恨), a representative emotion of Koreans, permeates throughout Korean history, culture, and art, and has greatly influenced Koreans’ theological understanding. This paper examines how Rizpah overcomes her Han (恨) of losing her two sons and how the community of Rizpah responds to and helps her throughout the story of Rizpah (2 Samuel 21:1-14), which is a representative example of Han (恨) in the Bible. Understanding the four aspects of Han (恨), therefore, this paper focuses on actions (행, 行) that help change Han (恨) from pain (원, 怨) and lament (탄, 嘆) toward feelings (정, 情) and desires of hope (원, 願). The case study of Rizpah may help the reader discover individuals and communities in the Bible who did not end negatively in the face of unending Han (恨) but sublimate Han (恨) into a positive side. The story of Rizpah reaffirms the importance of remembering, teaching, and solidarity together and points out the importance of building a community with hope and how to resolve our Han (恨) that remains today. After examining the story of Rizpah, this paper compares it with the case of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, a Korean experience significant to Korean Bible interpreters. It is to discover similarities and differences between ancient Israel’s and modern Korea’s experiences. Readers may ultimately learn essential lessons from the communities of ancient Israel and 20th-century Korea on how to break away from the wrong history of the past and move toward a better future.
