Abstract

1 Kings 2:1-9 has often been understood as an anti-Davidic propaganda accusing David of his immorality in which he instigated Solomon his successor to carry out a political vendetta against his personal enemies in the guise of religious piety. Bietenhard and Eschelbach came to this understanding through their respective methods, i.e., diachrony and synchrony. However, the present writer reached the opposite conclusion by way of reading the passage inter-textually in relation with 2 Samuel 23:1-7. This inter-textual reading is warranted in that both passages deal with David’s last words, one on a narrative level and the other on a poetic level. In addition to this formal similarity, the two passages have in common the issue of how the kingship can be successful and what the stumbling block for its prosperity is. From this it can be concluded that both Joab and Shimei whom David condemned as deserving death in his testimony to Solomon are no other than the evil ones mentioned in 2 Samuel 23:6-7.
