Abstract

This article surveys prior research on the translational origins of the Peshitta and examines recent trends and future research tasks. Existing scholarship on the Peshitta’s translational origins may be broadly divided into three positions: the Christian-origin hypothesis, the Jewish-origin hypothesis, and a mediating view that seeks to reconcile the two. The present study summarizes the argumentative logic and evidentiary bases of each position and organizes the recent research trends. In recent years, a growing consensus that translational tendencies and the influence of external versions vary from book to book within the Peshitta has fostered a shift away from holistic approaches toward micro-level investigations of the origins of individual books. Accordingly, this article focuses on the origins of Peshitta Proverbs and reviews prior studies under two headings: approaches based on its relations to other versions and approaches grounded in the theological features observed in the text. It further identifies the limitations of existing studies and proposes tasks that remain for clarifying the origins of Peshitta Proverbs. In view of the fact that, despite its significance for the study of the Hebrew Bible, the Peshitta has often been marginalized in prior research due to the linguistic barrier, this article aims to enhance the accessibility of Peshitta studies by mapping the research landscape on its origins and by delineating future tasks.
